The Christmas Bonbon Hat
Happy New Year!
I enjoyed family time with my nephews and niece over the break and thought it was an excellent time to take a break from writing, too. I’ve got a few topics fresh in my mind, but I thought I’d kick 2024 off with something light before getting into heavier reflections.
I’m not sure how this started or by whom, but my family has a tradition involving the bonbon hat. We traditionally eat lunch together on Christmas Day, and the game aim is to keep your hat on your head for as long as possible. It’s like the last person standing; the prize is the honour of keeping the hat on your head the longest. This year, I was the solo winner; a previous year, Nicole and I took our hats off at the same time in the car when we got home.
It’s not just my family that I have done this with. We had a friendsmas once, and this competition was pretty serious to the point that we all attempted to shower and sleep with the paper hat on. I was surprised to wake up the following day to find the hat still on my head, as I was sure I was a restless sleeper. I’m sure my Dad went to the service station to get fuel one Christmas with his paper hat on.
I would say that this is probably one of my favourite things about Christmas. All in the name of a bit of silly fun (may include some sabotage of trying to knock the hat off the other person’s head).
What Christmas traditions do you have with your family?
