I started placement last week, shadowing and learning from a rehabilitation consultant.
It was a pretty significant change in my environment and work attire. From a clinic room with a massage table and donning activewear to an open-plan office, sitting down and wearing corporate-appropriate wear. Any time spent at a computer is at home in my quiet study space.
I have been looking forward to starting placement because I learn better by doing and find it easier to remember information and tasks when I put them into practice.
My first thoughts on open-plan offices: How does anybody get any work done? There is so much noise, from colleagues on the phone to clients and colleagues having conversations with each other to the tapping of keys and the crunching of someone eating lunch at their desk.
I’ve read the same sentence 4 times 'cause. I’m also listening to the conversation and haven’t taken in anything I just read.
Noise-cancelling headphones work a treat when I’ve watched lectures or instruction videos.
Work is a big part of our social life, so I’m all for having a chat with colleagues. However, sometimes, it comes at the cost of productivity, so it has me thinking that perhaps a mix of office and home days might be good for everyone, particularly those who work better from home.
What is your experience with office environments, and what are your tips/tricks for getting work done?
I learn better by doing too.
Top tip: buy BIG noise cancelling headphones. 🎧
I would much prefer a quiet space to work but working from home is not an option in my work. I find it very difficult with the noise of an open plan office but also am unable to wear noise cancelling headphones due to having to be available all the time. It's not my style but I like the organisation I work for.
